Binkley (my grandfather, and history prof at Western Reserve University in Cleveland) thought microfilm and cheap near-print publishing were going to enable, back in the 1930s. He proposed that every family should write its history, then neighborhood historians use those to write neighborhood histories, and so on up the chain of communities (http://www.wallandbinkley.com/rcb/articles/newtools-output.html). He put together various WPA projects to support local history (Historical Records Survey, Annals of Cleveland). It&#039;s interesting to look into this kind of metahistory.
