Education at WordCamp SF 2008

Last weekend over 400 bloggers and developers descended on San Francisco, myself included, for WordPress‘ annual WordCamp meetup. WordPress is known for their revolutionary and open source blogging platform, which also runs this blog.  Most importantly, WP has an incredible community which supports the software which has become a model for many other open source projects, including our own Omeka.

After a brief introduction by WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg, Alan Levine of the New Media Consortium gave the first talk of the day on WordPress and Education.  His slideshow is on Flickr, and Alan gave a quick overview of how educators are using blogs, along with a shout-out to me and ScholarPress (thanks, Alan!).  Later in the day I met up with some teachers at WordCamp to pick their brains, and learned more about the upcoming official release of BuddyPress, which adds social networking features to your blog network.  ZDNet was live blogging WordCamp, and has a great run-down of the sessions that went on if you’d like to learn more.
